Best time to visit the Schilthorn Summit

Weekday vs Weekend

#
  • Weekdays: Generally, weekdays see fewer visitors. The best time to visit the Schilthorn is in the morning on weekdays, as crowds are minimal, allowing for a more enjoyable experience and shorter wait times for cable cars.
  • Weekends: In contrast, weekends attract many locals and tourists alike, particularly in winter when skiing is popular. The Schilthorn can become quite crowded during this time, making it less ideal for those seeking a serene visit. If you must go on a weekend, arrive early to beat the crowds.

Peak season vs low season

#
  • Peak Season: In summer (June to August), warm temperatures (20-25°C/68-77°F) bring crowds to Interlaken, with higher prices and busy attractions. Winter (December to February) attracts ski enthusiasts to snowy landscapes, especially on weekends at resorts like Schilthorn.
  • Off-Peak Season: Spring (March to May) brings fewer visitors, cooler weather, and lower accommodation rates as hiking trails open. Fall (September to November) also sees lighter crowds, cooler temperatures, and stunning autumn foliage, often at discounted prices.

How long should I spend at Schilthorn?

Schilthorn is more than a summit stop. The cable-car ascent includes multiple stages, and most visitors also pause at Birg or Piz Gloria. Your total time depends on whether you ride up from Mürren or Stechelberg, and whether you’re adding a meal or the Thrill Walk.

Schilthorn summit only: 2.5–3 hours

Ride up, enjoy the panorama deck, Walk of Fame, and a quick Spy World visit before descending.

Schilthorn + Birg Thrill Walk: 3–4 hours

Add time for the cliff walk, summit photos, and waiting for the next available descent cabin.

Schilthorn + Birg + lunch at Piz Gloria: 4–5 hours

Best for a slower visit with a reserved meal and time to enjoy the rotating restaurant.

Frequently asked questions about Schilthorn opening hours

Try to begin your ascent no later than 2:30pm. That gives you enough margin for the ride up, a short stop at Birg, summit views, and the last descent, which is usually around 4:55pm.
