History of the Schilthorn Cableway
Being a famous attraction and the highest peak in the Bernese Alps, the Schilthorn got famous when it became a part of the famous 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service movie.
In the late 19th century, it was decided that a railway setup should be built at the top of Schilthorn. Various projects were proposed for the mountain railway but couldn't be completed due to shape-making planning difficulties.
In the 1960s, a cable car technology was proposed to build the cable car pathway, and in 1962 Schilthorn Cableway Ltd. was founded to complete the task.
The construction began in 1963 in three sections: Stechelberg to Gimmelwald, Gimmelwald to Mürren, and Mürren to Birg. The cable car was opened to the public in 1967 when the movie was shot here in 1968.
